White Paper on Trends in the Intersection of GIS and IT

Progress in GIS is increasingly dependent on the recognition that it plays a significant role as a “pure science.” This recognition is necessary to help stabilize the semantics of GIS terms, and to establish precise expected behaviors for GIS components. Both of these developments are essential if GIS is to help advance our knowledge of our environment or to be successful in the marketplace. This argument is made in the context of several broad trends that exemplify the nature of the “pure science” that is invading GIS.
